Transparent & fair
Information on the energy cost surcharge (EKZ)
We want to provide you with reliability and quality despite the constantly changing energy markets. To compensate for any fluctuations in energy prices and their impact on our production costs, we have decided to introduce the energy cost surcharge (EKZ).
This step enables us to guarantee the sustainability of our production and continue to offer high-quality glass products without having to compromise on quality, delivery times or service.
The energy cost surcharge (EKZ) is clearly shown on every offer and invoice and is basically made up of the IPE Brent Index, the Dutch TTF natural gas price index and the Day Ahead Auction Price Index. It is adjusted to the respective market situation on a monthly basis.
The EKZ is calculated transparently and reflects current market developments so that we can react appropriately to fluctuations in energy prices. Our aim is to make these additional costs as fair and comprehensible as possible while maintaining our commitment to the environment, quality and especially to all our customers.
We thank you for your understanding and continued support as we face these challenges together.

Composition and calculation of the energy cost surcharge - FAQ
The energy cost surcharge currently consists of the three energy sources oil, gas and electricity.
We introduced the energy cost surcharge in November 2004. This was originally based on the massive rise in oil prices and is still calculated using the IPE Brent Oil price. The aim of the energy cost surcharge was to have a clear and transparent mechanism that makes it possible to adjust the surcharge according to the IPE Brent Oil Index – depending on the increase or decrease in prices.
In February 2022, due to the sharp rise in gas surcharges, the glassworks introduced the new glassworks surcharge (GHZ), which is also clearly and transparently based on the Dutch TTF natural gas feed-in value.
Since November 1, 2023, we have also been forced to introduce a regulation for the increasingly volatile development of electricity prices. A transparent solution based on the Day Ahead Auction Price Index in accordance with the Swiss Federal Electricity Commission (EICom) should also make it possible to track the corresponding additional prices responsible for the production of our refined products at any time.
The energy cost surcharge is calculated per kilogram of net weight of the glass supplied (number of square meters multiplied by the thickness of the glass multiplied by 2.5 kg specific weight).
The order date (order confirmation) is used to calculate the surcharge.
1. IPE Brent Index (oil)
Which index is used for the oil surcharge?
There are different values for the IPE Brent Oil Price depending on when the oil contract is needed, within which market or which individual contract it is. In order to have continuity here, we use the forward price for the middle month of the new quarter, which is given on the Financial Times website. This means, for example, that on January 15th of a year we use the IPE Brent forward price for February.
How often is the energy cost surcharge according to the IPE Brent Index (oil) reviewed and changed?
Quarterly, based on the IPE Brent Index value on the evening of the 15th calendar day of the previous month. The four quarters of the calendar year begin on November 1, February 1, May 1 and August 1. If the 15th falls on a weekend or a public holiday, the IPE Brent Index value of the last closing price is used for the calculation.
How is the amount of the surcharge calculated based on the IPE Brent Index (oil)?
The IPE Brent Index is calculated from a price range of 30 dollars per barrel. For every $4 increase in the oil price, the energy cost surcharge will be increased by 2.5 cents per kilogram of glass. The increase from the old 2 Rp. to the new 2.5 Rp. is related to the sharp rise in glass blending quotas. This change has been in force since August 1, 2023.
2. The Dutch TTF natural gas price index
Which index is used for the gas surcharge?
The new basis is the TTF natural gas price index, which you can follow under the link: Dutch TTF Natural Gas.
How often is the glassworks surcharge (GHZ) reviewed and changed according to the TTF natural gas price index?
Three working days before the end of the month, the average MTD (Month-to-Date) price is calculated as the arithmetic mean of the daily closing prices of the respective month. If the average MTD price is less than or equal to € 40.00/MWh, the GHZ is not charged.
How is the amount of the surcharge calculated based on the TTF natural gas price index (gas)?
The glassworks surcharge according to the TTF natural gas price index is calculated as follows: From a price bandwidth of € 40.00 per MWh, the difference to the effective price is calculated with the calculation factor of € 2.65/MWh/ton the surcharge. In addition, the value for yield and blending is extrapolated with a factor of 0.75.
Calculation example of the gas surcharge (as of July 1, 2025):
Difference between TTF and base value x calculation factor = €/tonne. This means: TTF = 136.00 €/MWh: 136.00 € – 40.00 € base value = 96.00 € x 2.65 € MWh/ton (calculation factor) = 254.40 €/ton = 0.2544 €/kg x current exchange rate (e.g. 0.95) = 0.2417 CHF/kg (plus yield/cutting surcharge factor 0.75) = 0.3222 CHF/kg. Please note that the amount is always rounded up to the second decimal place. The surcharge is therefore 0.33 CHF/kg.
3. Day-ahead auction price index (electricity)
Which index is used for the electricity surcharge?
The basis is the day-ahead auction price index for the daily electricity product peak (peak load) for electricity deliveries of constant capacity over 12 hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. according to the spot market report of the Swiss Federal Electricity Commission (EICom).
How often is the electricity surcharge according to the Day Ahead Auction Price Index (electricity) reviewed and changed?
The electricity surcharge is adjusted at the beginning of each month. The reference price for the calculation is the last weekly average price before the start of the respective month.
How is the amount of the electricity surcharge calculated based on the Day Ahead Auction Price Index?
Up to a weekly average price of €100.00/MWh for the daily electricity product Peak, there is no electricity cost surcharge. An electricity cost surcharge of CHF 0.01/kg glass is levied for every €50.00/MWh higher price. Relevant weekly average prices below € 100.00/MWh do not entitle the customer to an electricity cost discount.
Calculation example of the electricity surcharge (as of January 1, 2023):
Each € 50.00/MWh difference from the relevant weekly average price and base value of € 100.00/MWh results in a surcharge of CHF 0.01/kg glass. Applicable weekly average price peak: € 188.34/MWh Base value: € 100.00/MWh Difference: € 88.34/MWh Results in 2 x CHF 0.01 surcharge/kg glass: CHF 0.02 surcharge/kg glass
